Chris Sutton once again defended the job David Moyes is doing at West Ham as he responded to a disgruntled caller on BBC Radio 5 Live.

West Ham battled back from two goals down at London Stadium to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Burnley on Sunday (10 March).

That draw, coupled with the loss to Freiburg last week, has inevitably led to more questions being asked of Moyes’ future at the club.

As one fan argued Moyes is not getting the most of the team, and that West Ham should be where Aston Villa are in fourth, Sutton replied on 606 [10 March, 56m 48s]: “Are you a bigger club than Aston Villa?

“David Moyes, as far as I can see, is getting more out of this team than any other manager could in terms of league position and the ride you’ve been on.

“It’s one of those where, I look at the league table, and I know it hasn’t been perfect for West Ham this season, but you’re in seventh place and still in the Europa League.”

Whether or not West Ham are a “bigger club” than Aston Villa is irrelevant. Seeing a club of similar stature overperforming will rightly rile United fans.

Being seventh is all well and good, and some supporters do need to realise that the position the club find themselves is not disastrous.

David Sullivan is said to have offered David Moyes a new contract at London Stadium

At the same time, wanting more from what is a hugely talented group of players is not all that outlandish. Just when a corner appeared to be turned, then came the Freiburg and Burnley results.

Villa are showing, even if they were ripped apart by Tottenham on Sunday (10 March), what it takes to disrupt the established elite at the top end of the division.

West Ham fans do not want to be told that their glass ceiling is seventh place. Ultimately, the debate regarding whether the Irons can do better with a new manager at the helm will rumble on while Moyes remains at the club.
