Tottenham is having difficulty pursuing a dynamic Bundesliga defensive star.
Former Argentine international Jorge Burruchaga has declared that Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is significantly superior to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk, according to Radio La Red via SportWitness (h/t football.london).

This comes after the 25-year-old had a solid start to the 2023-24 season for both club and country. Romero is a competent defender who is also strong in the air and with the ball at his feet.

Burruchaga has been impressed by Romero’s performances. He believes the Spurs star is better than Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, whom many consider to be the best defender in the world. While there is some bias in the statement, Romero is on the right track, and his performances this season have been spectacular.

Connor Holden, a tactical analyst for Tribalfootball.com, examines Ange Postecoglou’s first weeks in charge of Tottenham and examines how he has successfully modified the team’s style of play.

Tottenham hired Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach in the summer after losing their greatest player and club captain, Harry Kane.

Tottenham have won three of their first four Premier League games since his arrival, drawing the other against Brentford on the opening day. They have 11 goals in the first four games, which is tied for the most in the league with Manchester City.

But what brings Postecoglou to Tottenham? What is his playing style/philosophy, and what has he done to get the Spurs going this season?

These two photos depict Tottenham’s starting lineup (image 1) and how it appears in build up/possession (image 2)image5.jpg

Postecoglou looks to invert both of his fullbacks and elevate both of his 8s to form the 2-3-5 shape shown in image 2. This gives his team a numerical advantage in core regions, as shorter distances between players allow for faster interchanges during the first build up phase.

Unlike some teams, though, Postecoglou does not mind his players rotating to occupy different places within the same tactical arrangement. When James Maddison lowers deeper to receive the ball, Destiny Udogie will abandon the space, allowing Maddison to continue.
