Liam Rosenior says facing automatic-promotion hopefuls Southampton at St Mary’s on Tuesday night is the perfect challenge, as his side look to make it four successive away wins on the bounce.

The Tigers’ task is a daunting one against a side unbeaten in their last 11 on home soil dating back to mid-September, and only saw their record 25-game run without defeat home and away ended by Bristol City at Ashton Gate last week.

Victory for City on their first visit to Southampton since the final days of their last Premier League campaign in Spring 2017 would see them jump from eighth to fifth in the typically congested Championship play-off race, ahead of facing top six rivals West Brom in Saturday’s early kick-off at the MKM Stadium.

City’s preparations for the game could scarcely be better, though, after the sensational scenes at Huddersfield Town on Saturday which saw Rosenior’s men recover from a 93rd-minute Terriers equaliser to score a 94th-minute winner from Jacob Greaves, backing up their 2-1 success at Rotherham last Tuesday night.

“It’s a nice easy one, isn’t it?” Rosenior joked in conversation with Hull Live. “Russell’s doing a magnificent job there. He’s got some outstanding players. I watched the game (2-0 win at West Brom), they can bring on (David) Brooks and he scores a magnificent goal.

“What a challenge for us. If we want to be a play-off aspiring team, we have to go toe-to-toe with these teams and see what we’ve got. I’m really, really looking forward to it but what we have to do is make sure that we get a fresh team out there ready to run because we’re going to need to.”

Meanwhile, Jean Michael Seri will return to the fold after his exploits in the Africa Cup of Nations and was given a big welcome at the club’s Cottingham training ground on Monday morning, but Rosenior will run the rule over midfielder Tyler Morton after he limped off in the first half at the John Smith’s Stadium a kick to the ankle.
