A familiar figure might be in the Blackburn Rovers dugout when Stoke City visits Ewood Park on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The future of current Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is in serious doubt, with reports he is set to depart. The Lancashire Telegraph reports that former Stoke City captain John Eustace is the early candidate to replace the Dane if he leaves the ailing club.

According to a “exclusive” article by the Telegraph, “Rather than looking for a caretaker boss, Eustace has emerged as an early favourite to succeed Tomasson.” The 44-year-old last worked for Birmingham City.

“Despite having the Blues in the play-off places, Eustace was dismissed in October and replaced by Wayne Rooney. That infuriated the Birmingham fans and Rooney’s reign was a disaster. He was subsequently replaced by former Rovers boss Tony Mowbray.”

Eustace appeared 74 times for Stoke between 2005 and 2008, at which time he was plagued by injuries. He was also one of the early contenders to take over at the bet365 Stadium after Alex was let go late last year, a post that Steven Schumacher eventually took.

Tomasson has grown more disgruntled at Ewood Park, and he has already revealed this week that he volunteered to leave last summer due to a shift in the club’s finances. His mood soured last week after a ‘administrative blunder’ put a deadline-day transfer for United States striker Duncan McGuire at risk.

Maguire, a USA international, was announced by Blackburn as a deadline day loan signing from Orlando City with a view to a permanent transfer, but the EFL has yet to ratify the agreement due to late paperwork submission.

On the pitch, Blackburn’s one-win streak in 11 games has pushed them to the bottom of the Championship table, and they face Stoke on Saturday afternoon, who are one point behind them and in urgent need of form and confidence.

If Eustace is hired by Blackburn, he will return to St Andrew’s to face Birmingham City on February 13.
