Graham Smyth is outraged after Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford revealed what happened to him last season.

Speaking on the BBC’s My Mate’s a Footballer podcast on Thursday (8 February), the 30-year-old revealed that Whites officials had to arrange security at his home after he missed a penalty in the club’s Premier League draw against Newcastle United, and that the forward had also been forced to close his social media accounts.

Smyth tweeted on Thursday that you would have to be a “proper moron” to turn up at a footballer’s home, adding that it’s “difficult” to imagine how someone would be “that angry at one individual to begin with”.

“You’d have to be a proper moron to show up at a footballer’s home,” claimed the journalist from the Yorkshire Evening Post. “It’s difficult to image being so upset at one person to begin with, let alone remaining that angry as you get in the car and go there. Freaks.”

No genuine Leeds United fan would do this to Patrick Bamford.

This is a huge line that was plainly crossed by a supporter because fans should never show up at a player’s house.

Everyone gets angry with players from time to time, but it should never become personal because, while we all enjoy the sport, it is not life or death.

No one deserves to feel as though their family’s safety may be in danger and it’s completely wrong for someone to go to those lengths to express their frustrations.

It must have been a difficult period for the forward because this is something you never expect to happen, and it’s no surprise he lost confidence in the months that followed.

The attacker now appears to have put things behind him, having shown excellent form at the start of the season to reclaim his spot in the team at Elland Road.
