31/12/10 LENNOXTOWN Freddie Ljungberg is unveiled as Celtic's latest signing
When he joined Celtic, FREDDIE LJUNGBERG, one of Arsenal’s Invincibles in the 2003–04 season, was 33 years old.
By the time he signed a contract on December 30, 2010, and made his Scottish Cup debut ten days later at Shielfield against Berwick Rangers, 2-0, it’s safe to say he was past his prime.
The 75-time Sweden cap midfielder would appear in just seven more games for Neil Lennon’s team before his brief tenure in Glasgow was ended in June 2011 to the surprise of all.
Ljungberg had been a fabulous player at Arsene Wenger’s London club, but had left in June 2007 to sign a four-year deal with West Ham. However, he was at Upton Park for just one season before his contract was scrapped by mutal consent.
Before agreeing to a six-month contract with the Hoops, he relocated to the Major League Soccer and played for the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders.
He left Parkhead in September 2011 to play for the Japanese team Shimizu S-Pulse, and a year later he announced his retirement from the game.
Though repeated back issues led him to put up his boots, he was convinced to play again with Mumbai City in the Indian Super League in September 2014; this time, there would be no recovery.
