Andy Dunn has blasted the Premier League loan system following the move of Kalvin Phillips to West Ham from Manchester City.

Writing on page 61 of the Sunday Mirror’s print edition on 4 February, the journalist said it’s important from a personal point of view for the England international to play well during his loan move in order to “rubber-stamp” his place in the squad for the upcoming European Championships.

But he added that it “doesn’t matter one jot” to the 28-year-old what happens to the Hammers while he’s at the tournament, which is why he believes the loan system is “rubbish” as the midfielder will return to the Citizens once his temporary switch comes to an end.

Kalvin Phillips could be a West Ham player come June

There currently isn’t an option in place for West Ham to secure Phillips on a permanent deal, but there is no reason to suggest they won’t come to an agreement with Man City before June comes around.

They were both keen to try and insert an option-to-buy clause into the deal, but they simply couldn’t agree on the fee for the midfielder.

If he is to make the England squad, then that will likely mean that he’s had a successful spell with the Hammers, which can only be seen as a positive thing for the club.

Andy Dunn is not a fan of the Kalvin Phillips loan move to West Ham.

The Premier League often gets things wrong, but it can’t be attributed with any blame in this situation because we literally signed up to this deal and wouldn’t have been able to sign him permanently in January anyway.

The main focus for everyone just has to be about supporting the player to help him get up to full speed and back to his best over the next fews months before reviewing the situation again further down the line to keep him at the London Stadium.
