Newcastle United transfers: This month, The Magpies have shown interest in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.
Newcastle United has reportedly expressed interest in signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, who has supposedly decided on his future.
As the January transfer window draws to a close, Belgian publication DH Les Sports revealed that Onana has chosen to stay at Goodison Park and support Everton in their fight against relegation rather than make a move this month.
Newcastle was worried about Joelinton’s long-term future at the team, so they pursued the 22-year-old to expand their alternatives in the midfield. Following a severe injury setback and contract uncertainty, United head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged that he wasn’t sure if Joelinton had played his final game for the team.
Manchester United and Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Onana, who joined Everton from Lille in 2022 for £33million. But with The Toffees being charged twice for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules resulting in a 10-point deduction and a second punishment pending, clubs are eyeing some of their more valuable assets.
Everton value the Belgium international at around £50million but may need to sell players in order to raise the funds required to comply with PSR. Last January, Newcastle were able to swoop in and sign Anthony Gordon from Everton for £45million including add-ons.
Due to the finances involved, Newcastle won’t be able to make a permanent move for Onana this January unless they were to sell a player first. While several players such as Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier have been linked with moves away from the club in recent weeks, The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle may look at loan deals with obligations to buy at the end of the season.
This month, Newcastle was strongly connected to a loan deal for Kalvin Phillips; however, they withdrew their interest when they learned of Manchester City’s loan fee demands. Howe reaffirmed The Magpies’ interest in the England international and clarified that the financial aspects of the transaction prevented the club from moving forward with a deal.
Since then, West Ham United has brought on Phillips on loan for the rest of the campaign, covering both the loan balance and the 28-year-old’s salary in full.
As things stand, Newcastle is not in the process of making any additions, as the winter transfer window closes on Thursday, February 1.
