Jamaal Lascelles, a defender for Newcastle United, is reportedly of interest to Besiktas, per the Daily Mail.

Lascelles was limited to a late substitute appearance in Newcastle United’s derby victory over Sunderland, casting doubt on his future at the club.

This has called into question his playing time and captaincy, especially in light of suggestions that Turkish powerhouse Besiktas is interested.

Formerly an indisputable starter, the 30-year-old defender is now ranked behind Sven Botman and Fabian Schar in Eddie Howe’s hierarchy.

The scenario is made more complicated by Botman’s recent comeback from injury, raising questions about Lascelles’ long-term future at St. James’ Park.

Although conjecture in the media is merely that—speculation—Lascelles’ contract ending in June and his declining playing time contribute to the gossip. Since joining Newcastle in 2014, he has become a fan favorite, so no one would be surprised if he left to play regular football somewhere.

But Lascelles has shown himself this season, filling in brilliantly for Botman while he was unavailable. His 17 starts in all competitions, including important Champions League games, demonstrate his fortitude and leadership.

His devotion and experience are still valuable, but the club has to put more emphasis on developing its future.

In the meantime, Besiktas intends to rebuild for the upcoming season following a dismal start to the year that has already resulted in the dismissal of three coaches.
