Sunderland are one of three Championship clubs under consideration to sign Premier League star Andrey Santos on loan this winter after the player returned to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.

Chelsea completed the purchase of the Brazilian teenager from Vasco da Gama last January for a fee in the region of £13 million, but Santos did not arrive in England until the summer. However, the teenager was quickly loaned out to Nottingham Forest.

Santos‘ tenure at the City Ground, however, did not go as planned. The Brazilian international made only two appearances for Forest in all competitions, including a seven-minute cameo at Anfield in his only Premier League appearance.

It was revealed earlier today that Chelsea had recalled Santos from his loan term the Nottinghamshire club, where he has not played since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge last month.

According to HITC reports, Chelsea is considering loaning out their 19-year-old talent for the rest of the season, aiming to avoid a situation similar to his time with Forest. Among the Championship clubs being evaluated for the short-term loan are promotion hopefuls Sunderland, along with West Bromwich Albion and Hull City.

Sportrac estimates Santos’ current contract at Stamford Bridge to be £10,000 per week, making him potentially one of the highest-paid players at the Stadium of Light. Chelsea may cover his wages.

In the writer’s perspective, Sunderland could replicate their success with Amad Diallo from the previous season by securing a loan deal for Santos, who has been praised as a “one-man war machine.” While positions differ, Santos could significantly strengthen the Black Cats’ midfield, potentially boosting their chances of returning to the Premier League.
