The January transfer window is now open, and Wrexham has already announced two transfers to get things started.

The Red Dragons are currently vying for one of League Two’s three automatic promotion slots. Phil Parkinson’s side sit third in the table, tied on points with Mansfield and five points behind leaders Stockport.

On New Year’s Day, they meet fourth-placed Barrow at the Racecourse Ground, with a defeat knocking them out of the automatic promotion places. Wrexham have previously been linked with an audacious January transfer push for Peterborough star and all-round EFL goal machine Jonson Clarke-Harris.

However, their success in League Two has piqued the attention of their current players, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney keen to retain the nucleus of their group for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Elliot Lee, who has 13 goals from midfield this season, has been linked with a move to Birmingham City. Lee, however, is not leaving Wrexham, with the club announcing at 12:01am on New Year’s Day that the midfielder has signed a new long-term contract until 2027.

The only good news was that cult icon and star striker Paul Mullin had extended his contract with the club for another three and a half years. Both Reynolds and McElhenney were quick to react to the news, with Reynolds wishing Wrexham fans a Happy New Year and McElhenney writing: “Good start to 2024.”

Lee told Wrexham’s official website when the news was announced, “It means a lot.”

“When I signed 18 months ago, there were high expectations, but I had no idea how well it would go.” I am overjoyed to be staying with Wrexham.”

“I am extremely happy and grateful to be able to extend my stay in Wrexham,” Mullin said. I have enjoyed every minute of my time with the club. It has not only become my club, but also my entire family.”

While Wrexham may do some serious business in bringing in players this month, committing Lee and Mullin to new agreements could be the most important.
