Adrian Clarke claims Man United can suffer from the head coach’s counterattacking strategy and have their relegation worries allayed.

Adrian Clarke examines the players and crucial tactical elements that could make a difference in Matchweek 20.

Analysis of the head coach: Nuno Espirito Santo
On Boxing Day, Nottingham Forest defeated Newcastle United 3-1 thanks to a masterful counterattacking performance sparked by their new head coach Nuno.

Nuno indicated his intention to attack by starting wingers Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi in a 4-2-3-1 formation, flanking No. 10 Morgan Gibbs-White and striker Chris Wood.

When Forest lost possession of the ball, they were willing to take the chance of leaving one or two players upfield, so they always had a way out.

And their forward four came together to tear open Newcastle’s defense after those swift changes.

Nuno stated following their victory that Forest would push very high and that, when the time came, they would spin and go. This put Forest in 16th place, two points above the relegation zone.

“Our plan was counter-attacking. It was all about transitions. We knew that, if you beat Newcastle’s press, you will have chances against them.”

Fabulous fast breaks

Forest had only executed 12 fast breaks all season prior to their win at St James’ Park, where they produced five inside 90 minutes.

Three shots came from those counters, including the first two goals of Wood’s impressive hat-trick.

From a turnover deep inside their own half, with most Newcastle players ahead of the ball, Gibbs-White received a pass on the half-turn to spring a 4v4 that they ruthlessly finished.

Hudson-Odoi almost scored a second on the stroke of half-time, and it came from a move that typified Nuno’s tactics.

Forest cleared from defence to striker Wood, who knocked the ball down for Gibbs-White, and with both wingers flying forward to support on the outside, he released Hudson-Odoi to race upfield for a shot.

Their quartet of forward players performed with this kind of energy and intelligence throughout the match.

Wood’s explosive quick break was the source of his second strike as well.

Ibrahim Sangare beat the press with a throw to Elanga after making an excellent interception on the edge of his own box. He moved quickly before picking out Wood with a gorgeous long pass, and Wood completed with style.
