The former Blues and Baggies defender hadn’t played in almost five years, but he returned last weekend.

Former Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion defender Paul Robinson, at the age of 44, has made a remarkable return to the football pitch.

Robinson, with a playing career spanning 22 years, amassed over 650 appearances in professional football. He played for various clubs including Birmingham City, Watford, West Bromwich Albion, Bolton Wanderers, and Leeds United. Notably, he experienced success with promotions to the Premier League with Watford and West Bromwich Albion.

Although his last appearance occurred in May 2018, entering as a substitute in a 3-1 victory over Fulham at the conclusion of the 2017/18 season, he has recently laced up his boots for the first time in over five years.

As initially reported by sister website Express & Star, Robinson made an appearance for Claverdon in the Birmingham & District League last Saturday. Sharing the pitch with his son, they secured victory over Diamonds Academy in his debut match.

Robinson plans to participate every other weekend, unless his new team requires him more frequently. Reflecting on his return to playing, he mentioned on the Baggies Broadcast, “It was really good, it is not at the levels I used to play, so my body can cope with it. It’ll be every other week unless they keep dragging me in, but I enjoyed it, and it is an opportunity to play with one of my sons. I’d like to do the same with all of them; it was a great lifetime experience and a great joy to grace the same pitch.”

Robinson left his position as first-team coach at Millwall following mutual agreement. Robinson worked for Gary Rowett, but after his departure and the appointment of Joe Edwards, he left The Den. Robinson, who worked as an assistant coach for the under-23s and later as head coach at St Andrew’s, expressed a desire to engage in football management.
