Barry Ferguson, a columnist for the Record Sport, was impressed by a young Light Blues starlet and awarded him high praise.

I’m about to pay young Ross McCausland a praise, but first let me clarify something.

People occasionally ask me to choose my best ever Rangers XI, which is a difficult challenge given some of the players I had the pleasure of calling team-mates during my time at Ibrox. Even so, there’s one person that constantly comes to mind, and he’s the guy who makes that line-up all day. I’m referring to Neil McCann.

Rangers FC winger Ross McCausland a wanted man as contract talks continue

I was aware that we had acquired a talented player when we brought Terry in from Hearts, as I had faced him multiple times and noticed his ability to pose a threat to us. However, it wasn’t until we became teammates and trained together regularly that I truly grasped the extent of his skills. While I knew he possessed goal-scoring capabilities and recognized his agility when taking on full-backs and delivering crosses, it was joining forces at Rangers that revealed the immense determination in his heart. Believe me, if there was ever a skirmish on the pitch, Terry was the first to step up. He was a natural-born winner who devoted every ounce of energy to ensure we achieved the desired outcome. Terry embodied the spirit of a relentless football player, consistently snapping at ankles and fearlessly engaging in tackles.

I lost count of the number of times I saw him rush back past Arthur Numan to stop an opposing attack. And I devoured it all. To put it another way, when I looked around the locker room before a game and saw Terry pulling on the jersey, I knew he was a person we could count on 100 percent. That brings me back to my praise to McCausland, because I saw Neil McCann screaming out of him the other week while watching him at Livingston.

Don’t get me wrong: the young kid has a long way to go in his Rangers career before he can compete with my old pal. But when I say he has all the qualities needed to make a similar effect at the club, I honestly can’t think of a bigger compliment. He, like Terry, is a pure winger with plenty of speed and a keen eye for goal. He looks to move forward, take on his full-back, and make things happen every time he receives the ball.

But it’s the work he does when he’s not in possession that gets me thinking back to when McCann first arrived at Ibrox.

The similarities are alarming, and you can tell how thrilled Rangers supporters are about him in these early stages by how they have reacted to him. So, like them, I’m crossing my fingers that the young man has solid people advising him as he considers the next stage of his career.

McCausland’s current deal expires in six months, and the rumour mill has already begun to spin, with Record Sport reporting that Brentford and a number of Italian clubs are interested. I have no doubt that they are. The Scottish market is now regarded as rich pickings, particularly following the success of my nephew Lewis and Aaron Hickey.

But, more importantly, if I were in McCausland’s camp, I’d be telling him that he’s in the right position, working for the right man. Because, as terrific as McCausland could be for the Rangers, Clement could be even better. The instructions given to the winger by the guy in charge in terms of what he does off the ball will determine his long-term success as a player.
