In the aftermath of last Friday’s revelation that Everton would suffer a ten-point deduction, the commission overseeing the decision is now poised to investigate potential compensation claims from other clubs. The understanding has been that if Everton were found in violation of Financial Fair Play (FFP) and particularly Profit and Sustainability Rules, rival clubs might seek compensation for the perceived advantage gained.

It appears increasingly likely that Everton could face compensation demands from clubs involved in recent relegation battles. The commission’s decision and ruling last Friday set a precedent that raises questions about potential punishments for other clubs found guilty of similar or more severe breaches. The situation also opens the door for clubs to pursue legal action against each other over alleged adverse football outcomes due to financial irregularities.

Proving a direct correlation between Everton’s admitted overspend (approximately £20 million) and on-field events poses a significant challenge, especially as the overspend is tied to payments for the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, rather than player transfers. Additionally, the commission’s report suggests no intention from Everton to gain a sporting advantage through their actions.

Complicating matters further, both Manchester City and Chelsea are rumored to be in breach of the same rules Everton has been penalized for, potentially to a greater extent and over a more extended period. This raises the question of whether clubs seeking compensation for losses to Everton could also pursue claims against City and Chelsea.

The looming time limit of 28 days, following the announcement of Everton’s punishment, adds urgency to potential compensation claims. Clubs considering claims have until the week before Christmas to apply, with the same commission that imposed the unprecedented points deduction on Everton set to review these claims. The outcome will shed light on whether the commission supports the claims of other clubs or takes a different stance.
