Newcastle United are keen on signing Estudiantes midfielder Benjamin Rollhesier in the January transfer window.

Newcastle United has renewed interest in Estudiantes standout Benjamin Rollheiser, revisiting the speculation from the summer. Newcastle were pursuing a move for Rollheiser, according to Alan Nixon of The Sun.

Estudiantes was said to be asking roughly £12 million for the attacker, who attracted interest from Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow in Russia. Newcastle is said to be interested once more, though Estudiantes has yet to receive an offer from the Magpies.

Benjamin Rollheiser is a Newcastle United target.

Rollheiser made his River Plate debut after previously playing for Estudiantes and Deportivo Sarmiento. The tiny wide player scored once and assisted twice in 34 first-team appearances for River before joining Estudiantes in 2022.

Rollheiser has been a standout for Estudiantes this season, scoring 12 goals in 54 games. The 23-year-old Argentinian attacker is tiny and left-footed, and he has played down the right flank and as a number 10.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Rollheiser has been compared to Lionel Messi. Over the summer, Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez told Ole that Rollheiser’s style of play reminds him of Lionel Messi.

We can’t expect Rollheiser – or anybody else – to reach Messi’s level, but the Estudiantes star may feel the time has come for a move to Europe.

Sunderland has also expressed interest in Rollheiser.

Newcastle may make a move for Rollheiser if they believe he can compete with Miguel Almiron down the right side of Eddie Howe’s attack. The Magpies may face competition for Rollheiser, and not just from the Russian clubs mentioned above.

Alan Nixon of the Sun claimed in September that Sunderland had agreed to loan Rollheiser ahead of the summer transfer season. The deal fell through, but Sunderland may be interested in reviving it in January if the Argentinian decides to go.

Newcastle would bet on beating Sunderland to a deal here, but the Estudiantes star may have some difficult decisions in January.
