Ten people were sent to hospital this afternoon following a collision between a bus and a car near a Pembrokeshire bridge.

While emergency services responded with the crash, the Cleddau Bridge and A477 were closed between Honeyborough Roundabout and the Pembroke Roundabout.

The collision occurred about 2.14pm on Tuesday, September 5, between a 52-seater bus and an automobile.

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service declared the crash a major incident and dispatched crews from five stations – Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby, and Narberth – to assist in the rescue of a’severely trapped’ driver who was airlifted to hospital by the Wales Air Ambulance.

Dyfed-Powys Police were on hand to assist with the bridge closure and transport injured passengers to hospital, alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service’s five ambulances, a duty operations manager, Cymru High Acuity Response Unit, and non-emergency patient transport vehicles.

The fire department reported that’many of the bus passengers are suffering from various injuries,’ while the Welsh Ambulance Service stated that nine patients were carried to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest and one patient was transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

In reaction to the patients being transported to Withybush, the Hywel Dda University Health Board issued a statement requesting that people refrain from visiting the hospital’s A&E department unless their condition is life threatening or they have a significant injury in order to assist with the incident response.

According to a spokeswoman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby, and Narberth teams were alerted to an incident on the Cleddau Bridge in Pembroke Dock at 2.19pm on Tuesday, September 5th.

“Crews were dispatched to a road traffic collision involving a 52-seater bus and a private motor vehicle.” Crews extricated a seriously trapped driver, who was subsequently airlifted to a hospital. Several bus passengers were injured, and many of them were brought to hospitals by road ambulances and police vehicles.

“A major incident was declared, but it has since been decommissioned.”

“Throughout this incident, road traffic collision equipment, an HGV platform, and trauma packs were all extensively used.”

“Some crews left the scene at 4.16pm, while others remained to assist the police.”

“We were called today, Tuesday 5 September, at approximately 2.14pm, to reports of a road traffic collision on the A477,” a Wales Air Ambulance representative stated. We responded with five emergency ambulances, one duty operations manager, one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit, and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles. We had help from colleagues from the Wales Air Ambulance. We moved one patient to the University Hospital of Wales and nine others to Withybush Hospital for additional care.”
