No. 1 Crystal Palace Now, Sam Johnstone has commented on Ederson, the number 31 for Manchester City.

During an interview with David Seaman for the Seaman Says podcast, the England international brought up the Brazil international.

And what about Ederson did Sam Johnstone say? Let’s examine this.

What’s the story?

The 30-year-old made a joke about how the £34.7 million Manchester City goalkeeper has “messed up” goalkeeping for him and his teammates because of the Brazilian’s skill with the ball at his feet, which has made several other teams insist on playing out of the back.

Johnstone joked, “I think Ederson’s skill with his feet messed that (traditional goalkeeping) up for everyone!”

When the South American joined Manchester City in June 2017, it was unquestionably a historic day in English football history.

Football fans witnessed the broad adoption of playing out from the back like never before, as well as the incredible long-range passing ability of Ederson, a goalie fit for a unicorn.

Almost all goalkeepers these days are required to collapse from the back, even the ones who appear quite uncomfortable doing so.

Ederson reinvented his role at Manchester City

Johnstone made a joke about Ederson messing up his job, but in reality, Ederson has accomplished the extraordinarily rare feat of reinventing his function.

Few players have ever achieved it, demonstrating genuine creativity in thinking beyond the box and approaching situations differently from those who excelled in that role in the past.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is another name that immediately comes to me. Other teams started to use strong technical players at right-back after seeing Liverpool’s No. 66 demonstrate a completely new approach to influence a game from that position.

Though Ederson’s role has changed, some goalkeepers may not like that their jobs are now slightly harder, but you can’t blame the 30-year-old for that.
