After missing out on Rangers’ chance to sign the Serie A breakout star from Lecce for a possible £3.2 million, Nikola Krstovic is now being pursued by several “big clubs.”

The way Nikola Krstovic has swept through Italian football at Genoa is reminiscent of Krysztof Piatek.

A little-known forward from Eastern Europe shows up and immediately makes an impact. So much so that, after just six weeks of Serie A football, Lecce may be able to follow in Genoa’s footsteps and turn a tidy profit on a player. His future is already the topic of much speculation.

Rangers looked at Lecce striker Nikola Krstovic

Rangers reportedly expressed interest in Krstovic; but, the former Dunajska Streda poacher chose to go to Lecce to emulate his idol and fellow Montenegrin, Mirko Vucinic.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, scouts from Italy’s top teams, including Inter and AC Milan, who signed Krstovic in 2019, are swarming the Stadio Via del Mare, just two months after the player signed his contract.

Krstovic’s agent, Milan Dudic, declined to comment on the veracity of the rumors. He does, however, acknowledge that one of Europe’s most highly mobile number nines is being closely watched by teams with considerably larger budgets than Rangers.

“His client has received inquiries from big clubs,” Dudic says to Calciomercato.

“A favorable experience of a significant Montenegrin football player like Vucinic in Salento was one of the factors that led him to join Lecce.” Thus, Italian football is quite popular in the Balkans.

There were interested other Italian clubs as well as alternatives in England and France. However, Lecce’s idea and (director Pantaleo) Corvino persuaded Nikola. The club and the city have a wonderful vibe.

Inter and AC Milan linked

In his seven Serie A starts thus far, the 23-year-old has scored four goals. His performance stands in sharp contrast to that of Rangers’ failing striker Cyriel Dessers, who cost the club more than £1 million more than Lecce paid for Krstovic.
