The former Leeds United midfielder is now again being strongly linked to Newcastle United.

Former Newcastle United forward Andy Cole has instructed his old team to sign Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder for Manchester City, but only if they intend to start him.

If Phillips’ playing time doesn’t increase in January, he may decide to leave Man City. Only five starts have been made by the 27-year-old since he moved from Leeds United for £42 million last year.

The Magpies could rekindle their interest in Phillips after considering a deal for him last summer. Summer signing Sandro Tonali is facing a lengthy ban due to an ongoing investigation by the Italian Football Federation and Prosecutor’s Office about illicit betting activities.

Cole stated to Betfred, “If you take into account the players already in Newcastle United’s midfield, he probably would struggle for game time. However, if Eddie Howe does move for his signature, then surely he would be signing Kalvin for the purpose of playing him.”

Because Newcastle United isn’t Manchester United, they can’t afford to sit a player who could fetch £50 million. Kalvin requires playing time, so Newcastle United should only sign him if he intends to participate in games.

“I think it would be a good move for Kalvin if this happened because they’re doing well in the Champions League, they play some lovely football, and he would only make them stronger. He went from being a very dominant, and regularly chosen, player at Leeds United to being sat on the bench at Manchester City.”
