West Ham Set to Offer Jesse Lingard a One Season Deal
Jesse Lingard had the best season of his career while on loan from Manchester United for the second half of the 2020-21 season. He scored nine goals in 16 appearances for West Ham United, helping them to their greatest Premier League season point total ever as they fell one point short of UEFA Champions League qualifying.
The Hammers wanted to capture Lingard from United in the next two transfer windows, but Old Trafford was too inept and unmotivated to make it happen.
Rather than being compensated, United let Lingard walk free, and the English international signed with Nottingham Forest. Now it appears that West Ham will finally acquire Lingard, and for free.
According to the Daily Mail, West Ham will offer him a one-year agreement that will be heavily subsidized.
Lingard had no goals or assists in 17 league games for the Tricky Trees last season, and only two goals in 20 overall games.
As a result, Forest let his contract lapse, and the 30-year-old winger was poised to join D.C. United in MLS, but that possible deal fell through. Since then, he’s been training with West Ham at their Rush Green facilities and has impressed enough to be offered a short-term contract.
The contract, however, will be less guaranteed money and more incentivized compensation based income. Because manager David Moyes is said to be concerned about the player’s motivation and fitness condition.
So it appears to be a difficult issue, and there is now even more material for comparing Lingard to Jadon Sancho (more on that here).
