Journalist Nick McPheat of BBC Sport claims that by selecting Kevin Muscat as their new manager, Rangers would be “copying Celtic’s homework.”

The Australian, who managed Japanese team Yokohama F Marinos, made 22 appearances for the Gers. Ange Postecoglou, who held the position for two years before departing the club to join Celtic in 2021, was replaced in it by Muscat.
“While appointing the Australian would perhaps give off vibes of copying Celtic’s homework – given he succeeded compatriot Ange Postecoglou in Yokohama,” McPheat writes for BBC Sport in regards to Muscat. “Rangers would be landing a manager who has won A-League and J-League titles.”

McPheat also stated, “Even with the odds stacked against them, in the short term at least, the job remains an attractive proposition,” in reference to all possible applicants. That can turn cruel very fast, though. Simply ask the previous two.

The Ibrox board will, of course, make the final decision, but Rangers supporters will undoubtedly have a say in who becomes the team’s manager going forward.

It would be irresponsible of the board to ignore the opinions of the Scottish club supporters when they are faced with making a significant choice.

Given his and Postecoglou’s connections to Yokohama F Marinos, it is obvious that any comparison to bitter rivals Celtic would be extremely unpleasant. If Muscat were chosen, that would undoubtedly be the case.

However, Postecoglou had an incredible time at Glasgow before moving on to Tottenham in the summer, and Muscat might have a similar future at Ibrox.

Muscat’s familiarity with the Gers from his playing days—he helped the team win a domestic treble during his one season there—gives him an even greater advantage over Postecoglou.
