The Catalan coach, who has been in charge since November 2021, signs a contract that runs through 30 June 2025 with an option for another year

FC Barcelona and coach Xavi Hernández have agreed to extend his contract until 20 June 2025, with an option for an extra year. The agreement took place this Friday at the Spotify Camp Nou headquarters, in the company of president Joan Laporta, first vicepresident Rafa Yusta, economic vicepresident Eduard Romeu, and director of the Area of Football, Anderson Luis de Souza, ‘Deco’.

Achievements so far

Xavi Hernández took over as FC Barcelona coach in November 2021. After leaving Al-Sadd in Qatar, the Catalan returned to the club where he played for 24 years, only this time as first team coach.

Xavi’s appointment introduced a new perspective to first-team matters, with the Terrassa-born coach bringing his ambition to get the club playing the Barça style, an identity he was familiar with during his playing days. The new coach’s goal was to put together a team with experience and young, which he has progressively accomplished.

Since the coach has had to adapt the team’s system to the players available and the hurdles that have stood in their way over the last 18 months, the route has not always been straightforward. Initially, a distinct 4-3-3 system was visible, but later modifications included a 4-4-2 with Gavi as a ‘false winger’.

Xavi has granted debuts to 12 La Masia players since becoming Barça coach. Since November 2021, Aleix Garrido, ngel Alarcón, Chadi Riad, Marc Casadó, Iaki Pea, Mika Mármol, Estanis Pedrola, lvaro Sanz, Ferrant Jutglà, Ilias Akhomach, Lamine Yamal, and Fermn López have all appeared for the first team.

Xavi has won 60 games, drawn 17, and lost 19, while also winning the Spanish Super Cup with a 3-1 triumph against Real Madrid in the final and the 2022/23 La Liga title.
