Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leicester City will get an update on their potential points deduction within days.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Foxes will face a points penalty “without a doubt” despite the delay in arranging a hearing.
Leicester were charged by the Premier League in March for breaking Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2022-23 campaign.
The Foxes have made a total loss of £215million across their last three top-flight campaigns, with clubs only permitted to lose £105million over three years under PSR.
Legal action was taken by Leicester in response to the charge, which has delayed the announcement of an independent commission – which could choose to apply a potential punishment.
Leicester face points deduction ‘without a doubt’, says Wyness
Wyness anticipates news on a potential deduction next week – and claimed the promoted club are unlikely to escape a penalty without a “big change in the rules”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s all behind closed doors at the moment with the lawyers.
“I’ve been following this situation very closely, and I’d expect some news next week.
“We’ll see how it goes, but it’s going to be hard. Without a doubt, there will be some sort of points deduction and Leicester will be fighting with one hand tied behind their back next season.
“The timing of the hearings will be key. They’ve delayed that by taking some action of their own against the Premier League, but that takes away a point of appeal through cooperating with the investigation.
“Overall, it’s going to be a battle for Leicester – but they’ll be up for the fight.
“Without a big change in the rules, it’s hard to see how they escape punishment – but they’ll give it a go, I’m sure of that.”
