Crystal Palace v Norwich City, Premier League, Selhurst Park, 28 September 2019

Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, must make the necessary cuts this summer as Palace talks to the star about a new contract.

Executives at Newcastle United are keeping a careful eye on Michael Olise’s circumstances at Crystal Palace. Only a year ago, after Olise inked a new contract at Selhurst Park, Palace added a £60 million release clause that was only available to specific clubs in order to safeguard their asset.

Palace is attempting to follow suit this summer as teams start around Olise once more, with Newcastle rumored to be among the possible candidates.

Palace is eager to offer the winger an upgraded contract that would contain a new release clause, increasing the escape option to £100 million, even if they are still vulnerable to losing Olise. Although Chelsea is reportedly very interested in the star, it is unclear if Olise will sign the new contract; nonetheless, Newcastle may be priced out of the talks.

The Magpies have a limited budget and must cut their cloth accordingly unless there are a spate of departures before the transfer window gets into its full swing. Howe rates the winger highly and is keen on a new wide man, especially if Miguel Almiron leaves in the summer trading period.

But so far Newcastle have not had any satisfactory offers for any of the players who are deemed as potential departures. A lack of European football at St James’ Park has affected Newcastle’s spending powers slightly with the release of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie an early indicator that there is no unlimited resources when it comes to the wage bill.
