Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Frank Lampard is not the right fit for the Burnley managerial vacancy.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed ex-Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper would be a “very exciting name” for Clarets fans.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (28 May) that Burnley owner Alan Pace is eager to bring in a big name such as former Chelsea and Everton boss Lampard as the club’s new manager.

Vincent Kompany left Turf Moor on Wednesday (29 May) to take the job at Bayern Munich. Lampard was last in a job at Everton but was sacked in January 2023 with the Merseysiders heading for relegation.

Burnley should appoint Cooper – not Lampard, says Wyness

He led Derby to the Championship play-off final in 2019, where the Rams were beaten by Aston Villa.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Burnley are a very attractive proposition for a manager trying to get back into a job.

“Someone like Steve Cooper is a very exciting name for the Burnley fans, and would be welcomed.

“He’s certainly one of the leading candidates.

“Lampard on the other hand, I don’t know if he’s quite got the experience in a promotion situation. He had limited success at Derby.

“He landed at Chelsea in a situation which was set up for him.

“He’s a talented guy, but I don’t think he’s quite the right fit for Burnley.”
