Tyrese Campbell has been released by Stoke City, and Sunderland could try to take advantage of this.

The Sunderland Football Club will probably have a very busy summer as they get ready for the 2024–2025 campaign.

The Black Cats do not currently have a permanent manager, thus until that is established, it is unlikely that the club will be considering transfers. This means that the team is entering the summer without a manager.

It is anticipated that the manager appointed this summer would have a hectic schedule due to both player departures and arrivals.

Tyrese Campbell might be the answer for Sunderland if winger Jack Clarke leaves the team this summer, as it appears increasingly probable that he will. Tyrese Campbell’s current circumstances suggest that Campbell would make a viable replacement.

This summer, Tyrese Campbell’s eight years with Stoke City will come to an end. The club announced that Campbell will depart after his contract expired.

The 24-year-old began his football career at Manchester City, but the team allowed him to go in 2016, and he later signed with the Potters.

Campbell participated in both the club’s under-18 and under-21 teams before to making his debut for the first squad in the 2017–18 campaign.

Following a few appearances, Stoke loaned the attacker to Shrewsbury Town, where he played in fifteen league games and scored five goals. After that, he returned to Stoke and was a regular member of the first squad.

Last season, when he played 41 games and contributed five assists in addition to nine goals, was Campbell’s best season with the Potters.

The winger has had injury problems this season, and even when he does play, it doesn’t seem like enough for the team to extend an offer for a new deal.

Sunderland should make a move for Tyrese Campbell

Fans of Stoke City and the Championship may be surprised by this, since Tyrese Campbell has demonstrated his abilities at this level over the last two seasons.

However, Campbell has now made that choice, and he will be looking for his next stop.

Though it’s early, Sunderland need to be trying to seize the opportunity and sign Campbell before another team does so on a free transfer.

As previously said, the Black Cats appear certain to lose Jack Clarke this summer, and with other players like Patrick Roberts having form issues, Sunderland does need to get better at the wide area.

Campbell might therefore be the ideal acquisition for the Championship team since, despite his struggles this season, he has demonstrated that he is capable of both creating and scoring goals at this level.

Tyrese Campbell’s 2022/23 Championship stats for Stoke City
Matches played 41
Minutes played 2,660
Goals 9
xG 8.9
Shots 83
Shots on target 37

xAG 4.7
Stats as per Fbref.com

The 2022/23 season was Campbell’s best in terms of numbers, as he contributed to 14 goals in total, as well as missing just five league games.

That season, Campbell scored nine goals, outperforming his xG, which stood at 8.9. He also grabbed five assists, and again, it was better than his xA, which was at 4.7.

The winger was averaging a goal 0.30 times per 90 minutes he played, and an assist came 0.17 times per 90 minutes.

Campbell was a nuisance in front of goal, as he took 83 shots, with 37 of them being on target, meaning he finished that campaign with a shot accuracy of 44.6%, as per Fbref.com.

So, the 24-year-old has the ability and technique to create havoc in the Championship; it is just that the 2023/24 season was disappointing for him and Stoke, as the player himself struggled with injuries and the Potters were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.

Campbell will know he has a lot to prove as such, but if he can stay fit, there is a very exciting player there, one that could thrive on the right platform.

Since the Stadium of Light is eager to continue adding elite young players to their roster, Campbell would be a wonderful fit for that platform.

He would be a valuable addition, knowing the Championship and offering them something different in the wide regions of the club, and he would not cost them anything in transfer fees. In addition to his broad range of passing, Campbell has also played as a striker, which might help Sunderland even if it may not be his natural position.

The Black Cats had trouble all season long in that part of the field, so the team will probably want to make improvements there. Therefore, having someone like Campbell who can play all over the front line is an added benefit since he gives the club another option and might assist relieve some of the pressure on the strikers.

considering his recent injuries, it might be a risky signing, but considering his desire to compete at the top of the Championship next season, Sunderland stands to get a valuable squad member at the very least.
