Last weekend, following Celtic’s 3-0 victory over Hearts, Rodgers mentioned looking forward to “a bit of fun” in the next game, which led Rangers manager Philippe Clement to accuse him of disrespect.

Rodgers addressed these claims in a pre-match media conference, which CeltsAreHere attended, explaining that his comments were misconstrued and stressing his respect for the intensity and competitiveness of the Celtic-Rangers rivalry.

Rodgers said: “Anyone who was at my press conference would have sensed how it was said. The reaction to that is totally without merit and has no context whatsoever.

“I’ve never referred to these games other than being intense and competitive. The occasion is one of the most iconic in world football and I love it. It’s one of the big reasons I am here. I have great pride and privilege managing Celtic in a Rangers game. The whole feeling around this game is absolutely amazing.

“I’ve seen some of the headlines around the disrespect and whatever else but it’s totally without merit. It was never in that context being said. I never would be that person to disrespect another manager or team. I suppose it’s part of the build-up for you guys.”

It’s set to be one of the biggest derbies of the season, with three points allowing Celtic to put one hand on the trophy, with just two games left after this one.

A trip to Kilmarnock is in store for midweek, then a return to Parkhead is set for next Saturday when St Mirren visits for the last league game of the season.

After that there is another derby, but this time at Hampden Park for the Scottish Cup Final.
