Steven Alzate, a midfielder for Brighton & Hove Albion, has returned early from his season-long loan with Standard Liege in Belgium.

Alzate, 25, joined Albion from Leyton Orient in 2017 and has seven years left on his contract. He is most likely to leave the Seagulls this summer.

Throughout the season, the Colombian international made 25 appearances for Liege across all competitions, contributing four assists and two goals.

Standard Liege released a statement that said, “We have authorized Steven’s early homecoming. It was appropriate to let Steven return to Brighton for the balance of the season, as our team now wants to concentrate on the players who will be here next season.”

Despite losing midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo last summer, the Seagulls allowed Alzate to leave on loan. It’s difficult to see him breaking into the first team next season with Billy Gilmour, Pascal Gross, Carlos Baleba, Jakub Moder and Jack Hinshelwood all pushing for starting roles in the central area. Albion have also been linked with a summer move for £30m Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
