Chirewa made his senior debut as a substitute in a Papa Johns Trophy encounter against Colchester in November 2019. He became the club’s second youngest player in history, behind Connor Wickham, when he signed a pro contract at the age of 16 and 31 days.

The Chelmsford-born teenager went on to start a Papa Johns Trophy game against Cambridge United last October and came off the bench in the following month’s 4-0 FA Cup success over Buxton at Portman Road.

“It’s one that we’re delighted to get over the line,” said Wolves academy manager Jon Hunter-Barrett. We’ve been studying Tawanda’s progress since he was 16, waiting for the proper chance to approach him and get him across for his services.

“His key characteristics are his ball handling in tight areas and his ability to get the team up the pitch to create and score from deep areas.”

“As always, with one of our key strategies of looking for loan opportunities for our players at the right time, the departures of Harvey (Griffiths) and Alfie (Pond), as well as the steady progression of one or two others into the first-team squad, it was important we strengthened our U21s to ensure they have the ability to compete throughout the season.”
