The Diamondbacks’ exploits in the closing stages of games last season earned them the moniker “Answerbacks,” which has been a defining characteristic of their ascent to the top of baseball.

Nevertheless, they haven’t had the same success with comebacks in the first half of 2024, as they have now been the victims of them.

The Diamondbacks appeared hungry for revenge after their back-to-back losses in extra innings, as they launched a six-run first inning to try and level the series against Atlanta.

Nevertheless, the Braves prevailed 9-8, and the D-backs lost their third consecutive game by a one-run deficit despite having a six-run lead.

In the final four innings of the loss, Arizona’s offense managed just one runner in scoring position. A staggering seven of their twelve hits occurred in the first inning, with five before an out was recorded.

Conversely, the bullpen’s early-season woes persisted, with Bryce Jarvis and Luis Frias each surrendering two runs, paving the way for Atlanta’s comeback in the 7th and 8th innings.

The Braves‘ hitters amassed 15 hits, primarily thanks to the core lineup: Austin Riley, Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna, and Michael Harris II, who collectively went 10-18, driving in seven runs.

On the bright side for Arizona, Ketel Marte has looked excellent so far this season. Marking his 2nd consecutive leadoff home run, Marte launched a ball 461-feet on the 2nd pitch of the ballgame.

The Diamondbacks will look to avoid a series sweep tomorrow morning at 10:35 am.
