The match between Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday will be refereed by a referee who has never called an Aston Villa home victory.

Before the Villa Park match, there will be a lively discussion about the Premier League selection.

Wolves have enjoyed the better of the West Midlands Derby in recent years. The visitors’ last defeat came in December 2020; three victories and three draws have ensued since then.

Villa will be desperate to turn the tables but will have to do something that has never been done at Villa Park.

Who is set to take charge of Aston Villa’s Premier League clash against Wolves?

There have been several high-profile decisions made during the 2023/24 season: The refusal to award a penalty after Jeremy Doku’s high boot on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, Tomas Soucek’s disallowed goal last week and Luiz Diaz’s offside drama against Tottenham.

The 43-year-old’s failure to award Nottingham Forest a dropball during their late defeat to Liverpool has resulted in apologies, coaches being banned, and owners storming the pitch; for a neutral, it was enthralling viewing.

Unfortunately for Unai Emery, Tierney’s record at Villa Park is extremely worrying.

Aston Villa concern over Paul Tierney appointment

It is almost certainly a coincidence and has nothing to do with an underlying bias against the home side. Still, according to World Football.Net, Tierney has never officiated an Aston Villa Premier League home win.

The 43-year-old has managed four previous top-flight matches at Villa Park, with one draw and three losses for the hosts.

Overall, the Villans’ record under Tierney’s stewardship is poor. Ten Premier League matches have resulted in just one win and 13 yellow cards have been handed out.

So, if Emery’s side want the bragging rights on Saturday, they will have to do something they have never managed previously.
