He arrived at Goodison Park for a high cost, but he failed to produce.

Everton’s financial difficulties have been widely reported in previous years, and the team has been penalized six points this season as a result.

In addition to spending a significant sum of money on their new stadium, the club has run afoul of the Premier League in the past because of their inconsistent expenditure.

Though the club spent over £20 million on players like Yerry Mina, Yannick Bolasie, and Jean-Phillippe Gbamin—all of whom left the team on free transfers at the end of their contracts and failed to deliver value for money—their dismal performance in the market is undoubtedly noticeable.

The team has been more effective recently, acquiring young players like Jarrad Branthwaite, a defender who cost £1 million when he joined from Carlisle United in 2020 and is currently attracting interest from Manchester United worth £75 million.

The team has also done well financially in recent years when it comes to player sales, and they made the right decision in selling one player for a high price even if he didn’t have much of an influence at Goodison Park.

Moise Kean’s stats at Everton

After scoring two goals in his first three international matches, 19-year-old Italian striker Moise Kean was signed by the Toffees in August 2019 for a fee that could eventually reach £27.5 million.

In his debut season in English football, the striker made 33 appearances. Kean scored just two goals in the 2019–20 season.

He would, however, open the following season with the Toffees scoring twice in his first four games before agreeing to a loan agreement to play the remaining games of the 2020–21 season for Ligue 1 team PSG.

The teenage player’s move to the Parc des Princes proved successful as he scored 17 goals in his one season there. However, Kean returned to Goodison at the conclusion of his loan, meaning that the French team decided not to make the deal permanent.

At the beginning of the 2021–2022 season, Kean would make two appearances before returning to Juventus on a two-year loan, with the Italian powerhouses having the option to extend it.

The now 24-year-old rejoins the team for £25 million, which is only £2.5 million less than they sold him for four years ago, after the Old Lady chose to exercise the option in the loan deal. Considering that Everton hasn’t scored many goals in England, this was a good commercial move.

Moise Kean’s stats in 2023/24

Nearly one year on from the 6-foot striker’s permanent return to Italy, he has failed to replicate his form that saw Everton decide to fork out £27.5m for his signature.

The Italian, who has made 14 appearances in Serie A this season without scoring a goal, is currently worth less on Transfermarkt at £14 million than Everton’s newest high-profile attacker, Beto.

The Portuguese striker cost almost £30 million to sign with Everton from Udinese. In his patchy first season, the 26-year-old scored just four goals for the Toffees.

Although Transfermarkt reports that his market worth has since plummeted to £18.7 million, he has scored considerably more goals this season than Kean, and Everton made the right decision by selecting the 6′ 4″ attacker in instead of the Italian.

Examining the numbers of the two strikers, Sean Dyche might have struck gold as Beto’s stats per game are significantly higher than Kean’s.

Everton’s number 14 has won 4.2 aerials per 90 possessions on average this season, more than three times as many as the Italian, while Kean has only managed 1.3.

With 1.7 tackles more than Kean’s 1.3, the Portuguese striker has the advantage over the Juventus forward as well. Beto is a better fit for Dyche’s pressuring from the front, which is one of the reasons the Toffees have the best defensive record outside of the Premier League’s top four.

Although Beto hasn’t scored as many goals as the Everton supporters would have wanted, it’s obvious that the team made a smart business decision in letting Kean go and replacing him with a player more in line with the manager’s playstyle.
