According to reports, Birmingham City and former manager Gary Rowett are discussing the idea of Rowett taking over as interim manager till the end of the current campaign.
According to The Mirror, Blues are ‘leaning’ toward Rowett for a comeback. As Birmingham looks to fend off the possibility of relegation, talks have commenced with the 50-year-old. Birmingham has not won as Tony Mowbray’s assistant while he recovers from an illness. Mowbray’s right-hand man Mark Venus has been named in Mowbray’s place.
Journalist John Percy of the Daily Telegraph corroborated the rumors, predicting that Rowett would be confirmed later today. He will serve as a consultant or as the head coach in transition.
Due to their superior goal differential over Huddersfield Town, Birmingham is safe from relegation. Birmingham has dropped from 15th to 21st place and has only gained one point out of a potential 18 under Venus’s direction.
His proposed appointment will see him become the sixth person to take on the role in some capacity. John Eustace began the campaign in charge and was later replaced by Wayne Rooney, but the Man United legend was then sacked in January. Under-21s boss Steve Spooner took the role on a caretaker basis before the appointment of Tony Mowbray, and then when Mowbray stepped aside, Venus became the fourth person to take on the role.
The fifty-year-old managed Birmingham City after serving as a player for the team from 1998 to 2000. From 2014 to 2016, he was under fire at St Andrew’s and was controversially fired while the team was in seventh place. This season, he was in the play-offs as well when Wayne Rooney replaced John Eustace in that role.
During his first stint, he managed 106 games for Birmingham, winning 42, drawing 32, and losing 32. Rowett oversaw two finishes in the tenth position in a row.
Rowett left Millwall in October 2023 by mutual consent, ending his four-year tenure. Ever since he left Millwall during the winter, he has been a Sky Sports pundit.
