A new collaborative effort between Wrexham AFC in Wales and Kick4Life FC in Lesotho aims to promote international cooperation and exchange between two community-oriented football clubs spanning Europe and Africa.
Wrexham and Kick4Life intend to enhance their community impact by engaging in coaching exchanges, jointly advocating for women’s football, and collaboratively developing and implementing a new ‘Football for Good’ curriculum covering health, education, social inclusion, and employability. Over the next three years, the partnership aims to reach 3,000 vulnerable children and young people across both communities.
This club twinning initiative builds upon the national twinning between Wales in the United Kingdom and Lesotho in Southern Africa, established in Wrexham in 1984. The ‘Wales-Lesotho Link’ has facilitated various collaborative projects, including educational and creative exchanges, fostering cultural awareness and understanding, and facilitating a mutual exchange of ideas and knowledge.
Humphrey Ker, Executive Director of Wrexham AFC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the club’s overarching goal of connecting the Wrexham community with the world. Kick4Life Co-founder Steve Fleming highlighted the unique partnership’s potential to effect positive social change, emphasizing mutual learning opportunities.
Motlatsi Nkhahle, Kick4Life’s Country Director, underscored the shared commitment to community engagement despite the geographical distance separating the two clubs. The partnership receives support from the British High Commission to the Kingdom of Lesotho, with High Commissioner Harry MacDonald praising Kick4Life’s transformative work and the potential of the partnership to expand opportunities for young people in Lesotho.
As part of the collaboration, Kick4Life will establish the Lesotho Wrexham Supporters Club, with its launch coinciding with a screening of the Sky Bet League Two match between Wrexham and Harrogate at Kick4Life’s No.7 Restaurant in Lesotho.
