Luke Thomas, a left-back, was targeted by Leeds United early in the season, but he decided to sign with Sheffield United. Now, he will undoubtedly wish he had joined us.

The highly regarded 22-year-old Thomas immediately returned to the Premier League with newly promoted Sheffield United after leaving Leicester on loan. Leeds made an attempt to sign Thomas since they desperately needed a left back.

He did, however, select Sheffield United because he wanted to play Premier League football. Before his loan was canceled in January and he was sent on loan to Middlesbrough, he only made 13 appearances for The Blades.

Considered something of a coup for Michael Carrick’s team, Thomas participated in five of the six matches that he had since been added, skipping the match against his parent team, Leicester. He hasn’t exactly leaped off the page for Boro, though.

In fact, Carrick was benched and left unutilized on Wednesday night when his team needed to win. Without Thomas, Luke Ayling’s team overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Norwich at The Riverside.

Luke Thomas will be wishing he joined Leeds United last summer

Thomas has gone from rejecting Leeds – with Daniel Farke’s men pushing for automatic promotion – to being dropped by Boro, who sit way down in 12th place and lack any hope of a late play-off push.

Ask Thomas now, and he might be wishing he chose to accept a loan move to Leeds from Leicester. Certainly, he would have been first choice with left-back Junior Firpo injured to begin with this season.

But, Thomas will now have to work hard to get back into Boro’s side under Carrick. Come the summer, it will be interesting to see where the £20k-a-week defender ends up. Maybe, Leeds retain an interest.
