Oliver Glasner is expected to take over as Crystal Palace manager in lieu of Roy Hodgson, who looks to be losing his job after becoming ill during training.

Roy Hodgson is reportedly “taking stock” after being admitted to the hospital following a medical emergency during a Crystal Palace training session, according to Danny Murphy.

After becoming ill on Thursday, Hodgson, 76, was transported to the hospital and is currently in a stable condition. Having coached for 48 years, the Englishman is by far the oldest manager in the Premier League.

It appears that his days in the dugout are numbered as Palace had been planning to replace him with Oliver Glasner, the former Frankfurt manager, prior to his illness. Murphy has now revealed that Hodgson has made indications that he is prepared to call it a day on his remarkable career.

The former midfield player led Hodgson’s team to the Europa League final while they were at Fulham. Since his illness, he has messaged the seasoned boss and been in regular contact with him.

“Not only was Roy Hodgson a major influence on my career, he’s someone I’ve stayed close to after I hung up my boots, which isn’t always the case in the football business,” Murphy told the Daily Mail.

“I messaged him after the worrying news that he’d been taken ill at Crystal Palace’s training ground and was reassured by his replies. He said he was feeling fine, taking stock and prioritising his health. It was good to hear.

“At 76, he’s absolutely right to put himself first — and he indicated he’s starting to realise that himself. I’m sure he felt an enormous sense of responsibility in a tough campaign for Palace, but if this is a full stop on his managerial career, he should step away with full peace of mind.”

Hodgson is stable and undergoing testing, Palace said on Friday afternoon. Who will be in control of the club for Monday’s match against Everton is still unknown, but the manager who is under fire last week came out swinging after a loss to Chelsea.

“It’s a rough time, primarily due to the injury issue, but there are still 14 games remaining. There are a ton of games, points, and matches left tremendous be played, according to Hodgson.

Even in some of the other losses we’ve experienced, I believe we’ve demonstrated enough. I don’t have any worries about it since there have been many games where, honestly, things could have gone a little bit better for us.

“However, I must stress that this is not a place for complacency. We acknowledge that we are in the bottom half of the table and that we need the points badly to get out of the relegation zone.

“However, the real question is: Do I believe that this team of players is talented enough to advance us at this point? Yes, I do. I believe they gave it their all [against Chelsea], which strengthens my faith and conviction.”
