Enzo Maresca shifted his pack as Leicester City beat Watford on Saturday, and the inclusion of Ben Nelson will pay rewards in the long run.

Enzo Maresca claimed that including Ben Nelson in the Leicester City starting XI for the first time in a Championship match on Saturday, when the Foxes defeated Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road, was a ‘pretty straightforward’ decision. In the absence of the injured Jannik Vestergaard, who is expected to return next week, Nelson was chosen over Conor Coady to pair Wout Faes at the heart of defence.

“The manager has to take the decision,” Maresca said of the call to include Nelson. “Sometimes they’re good, sometimes not so. With Ben it’s quite easy. I really like him. For me he is still 50-60%, because he can be much more braver on the ball. He’s still a little bit shy but he’s just 19 and he needs to improve many things – but I’m very happy with this performance.”

Elsewhere, Maresca – who has both Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough visiting the King Power Stadium this coming week, also handed starts to both midfielder Dennis Praet and the versatile James Justin, to combat the Hornets’ threats: “The first XI on Saturday, JJ played because their wingers are very quick, very good. Dennis is playing good, he gives us more physicality in the middle, also he’s a quality player.”

Leicester already has an astounding 75 points after 31 games, averaging just under 2.5 points per game with 15 games remaining. Indeed, 75 would typically be enough for a play-off spot in any given Championship season, so City’s ability to claim that score at this point is astonishing. Not everything went smoothly in Hertfordshire.

“A big three points in this moment, the important part of the final run,” Maresca concluded, reflecting on his side’s battling qualities in the second half. “Overall I’m happy because it was a complete performance in terms of we played when we needed to, we suffered together. After the goal we conceded we lost a little bit of confidence, that is normal – a normal part of the process.

“They took a little confidence from that. You’re away, the crowd are up, it’s normal. We suffered a lot together. After the goal we conceded the only chance they had was when Wout touched the shot and it was almost an own goal, but overall I’m happy.”
