Fabrizio Romano believes West Ham chief Tim Steidten would be an “excellent option” for Liverpool in their search for a new sporting director.

The Reds need to fill that void as Jorg Schmadtke is stepping down from his role at the end of this week.

According to the Daily Mail [31 January], Steidten is a leading candidate to succeed Schmadtke and he would possibly be open to the move.

Writing in his Daily Briefing column on Thursday [1 February], Romano said: “I’ll be more clear on their situation regarding a new sporting director in the next days.

“Nothing is happening this week apart from Michael Edwards being approached last weekend. I’m aware, however, of links with Tim Steidten and in my opinion he would be an excellent option.

“He did an incredible job at Bayer Leverkusen and he’s also now doing great at West Ham; but let’s see, it’s still early stages in Liverpool’s search.”

Steidten has only been at the club for seven months, yet already his influence behind the scenes is very clear to see.

The German has played a major role in the signings of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez and Kalvin Phillips.

When you also factor in the signings he made in the same role at Leverkusen, it is clear to see why Liverpool are showing an interest.

West Ham could do without their top transfer chief being poached, even if we are about to enter a four-month period between windows.

Just because teams are unable to make signings, it does not mean those high up will not already be looking for possible new recruits for the summer.

No approach has yet been made by Liverpool, but that was never likely to be the case with the winter transfer window still ongoing for now.

Michael Edwards has already rejected a return to Anfield, and let’s hope Steidten sees sense and realises this West Ham project is just as exciting.
