Elfsborg seems to have verified that Hakon Valdimarsson is “getting close” to leaving Celtic, as Premier League powerhouse Aston Villa is supposedly vying for his services.
Celtic cannot continue to neglect the need for a new number one for very long, since Joe Hart’s contract is about to expire. Furthermore, the Scottish champions are probably going to look outside the organization for a new hire, as neither Scott Bain nor Benjamin Siegrist appear to be being considered for the position.

Andriy Lunin of Real Madrid is purportedly one possibility. However, that has been made more difficult by the fact that, due to Thibaut Courtois’s injury, the Ukrainian seems to have taken Kepa Arrizabalaga’s spot as the Spanish powerhouses’ first choice.
Therefore, Hakon Valdimarsson is not only more accessible than Lunin, who is rumored to be worth about £2 million, but also more reasonably priced.
Hakon Valdimarsson of Celtic and Aston Villa
Celtic is reportedly interested, according to the Goteborgs Posten. Meanwhile, according to Fabrizio Romano, FC Copenhagen and Aston Villa have also just made “formal bids” for the 2023 Allsvenskan Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Although Elfsborg’s sporting director declined to comment on whether specific clubs are involved, it seems as though Valdimarsson is getting closer to leaving during the off-season in Swedish football.
“Hakon is really good,” Stefan Andreasson tells Fotboll Direkt. “And we have discussions with some clubs.
“We’ll talk next week about which options are available. Which are concrete. What’s good for Elfsborg and what’s good for him. Then we’ll see. It’s getting close.”
Andreasson, speaking after Elfsborg held an open training session on Friday, admitted that he is flattered to have caught the eye of Unai Emery’s Champions League-chasing Aston Villa outfit.
However, he also pointed out that the promise of regular game time would likely play a big role in choosing his next club. And the number one role at Villa Park looks beyond him unless Emiliano Martinez – the club’s World Cup-winning shot-stopper – departs first.

“It is big. They are a top club in the Premier League and they are playing really well. It is huge to see that they are interested. It shows that I have done well,” Valdimarsson explains to Aftonbladet.
“That could be (a good move for me). It’s top players, it’s the highest quality of everything. Training with some of the world’s best players is good for your development.”
“FCK (Copenhagen) is a big club. They have played in the Champions League two years in a row and are probably Scandinavia’s biggest team. It is not as big as the Premier League, but it could also be a good step,” Valdimarsson adds.
“The goal is always to be able to play, if I move. Right now, I’m in Elfsborg and don’t know what will happen.
