The loan club for Blackpool has confirmed that defender Will Squires has returned from his stint at Southport.
In an effort to give the young player experience, Blackpool allowed him to temporarily join the National League North team last month.

Squires, 19, teamed up with Tangerines teammate Brad Holmes at the sixth-tier team. Jim Bentley, the former Football League manager, then had Squires make six appearances for the squad to further his development.

He has returned to Bloomfield Road, as confirmed by Southport, and they have made the decision to release him from custody. They have, nevertheless, sent him their best wishes for the future.

Blackpool man returns

Blackpool have a decision to make on what to do with Squires for the remainder of this season.

He has been on the books of the League One side for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks. The prospect is highly thought of and has been a regular at various youth levels over recent years.

Squires was loaned out to Bamber Bridge in the Northern Premier League earlier in this campaign and will be looking to build on that experience with Southport now in the league above.

He signed his first professional contract with the Tangerines in May 2022. It was a one-year agreement that included the option of a 12-month extension, which was exercised this past summer.

He played in 44 competitions and contributed to the Seasiders’ Under-18 team’s victory in the Lancashire FA Pro-Youth Cup last year.

Despite making two appearances for Neil Critchley’s team in the EFL Trophy this season, Squires is still lower on the hierarchy.

Nottingham Forest defeated Blackpool 3-2 at home in the FA Cup Thursday night.
