Hugo Lloris has left Tottenham Hotspur due to connections with Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Hugo Lloris, a former transfer target for Newcastle United, has joined a new team.

The longtime Spurs goalkeeper has signed a contract with Major League Soccer team LAFC, which he will play for until the end of the campaign. The World Cup winner from France may choose to stay an additional two years.

His free transfer to the MLS marks the end of an 11-year spell with Spurs which saw him make 447 appearances in all competitions. According to the Los Angeles Times, the 37-year-old will earn a total of £275,000 through the duration of his short-term contract, making him one of the lowest-paid goalkeepers in the MLS.

The new MLS season gets under way in February. Lloris’ move comes after Newcastle were linked with a move for the goalkeeper following an injury to Nick Pope last month.

Goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal and David De Gea, a free agent after leaving Manchester United, are among the goalkeepers with whom the Magpies have been linked. In Pope’s absence, Martin Dubravka has been starting in goal for Newcastle, although in the eight games since the injury, he has given up eighteen goals.

Since Ange Postecoglu joined Spurs during the summer, Lloris had not appeared in a game for the team. At St. James’ Park, he made his final Premier League appearance as Newcastle defeated Spurs 6-1.

Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were severely damaged when Lloris gave up five goals in the first twenty-one minutes of the game and was substituted at halftime as Newcastle rampaged. Spurs eventually finished the game outside of the European positions.
