One West Ham United player is reportedly a shock January transfer window target for La Liga giants Barcelona.

Not only does he play for West Ham, but Barcelona appears to have their eye on a very unexpected January transfer market target who is now unable to break into our starting eleven!

Although Hammers manager David Moyes may lose at least one of his current crop, he needs to sign one or two players this winter.

According to a report by football journalist Bruno Alemany, Pablo Fornals appears to be Barcelona’s surprise target as Xavi looks for a Gavi replacement.

Fornals, 27, has been awful lately, but in reality, he hasn’t played much for West Ham in the last 14 months, and he’s already been connected to a January departure.

It’s hardly surprising that he lacks rhythm at the moment, and it wouldn’t come as a huge shock if he quits the club the next month.

The Hammers have used their option to extend his contract by a further year, although it is evident that this was done purely to preserve his value. And now the Spaniard might be ready to head back to his native country.

Barcelona target Pablo Fornals in January

The former Villarreal player may be headed back to Spain as Barcelona looks to replace Gavi on a temporary basis.

Fornals leaving this winter will, in my opinion, be the best course of action for everyone.

This season, Moyes has only allowed the 27-year-old midfielder 235 minutes in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), and he has significantly regressed.

When Moyes does give him a chance, he places him wide on the left, where his lack of speed and strength makes him totally unnecessary.

If Pablo Fornals is to have any chance of breaking into the Spain squad for Euro 2024 this summer, he most certainly needs a fresh start away from West Ham.

Although the Spaniard’s departure this winter is anticipated, it is shocking that Barcelona has him on their radar for the January transfer window.
