Goalkeepers have a reputation for being a touch crazy, but one former Premier League goalkeeper takes the cake for threatening delivery guys with a sword and shouting on Sky Sports.

Everyone knows that goalkeepers frequently have a screw loose, but few are as outlandish as ex-West Ham and Derby shot-stopper Stephen Bywater.

Stephen Bywater

After being moved to east London by Harry Redknapp in 1998 and being thrown directly into the junior set-up, Bywater played nearly 60 times for the Hammers.

He won the FA Youth Cup with Premier League legends Joe Cole and Michael Carrick in 1999 and had a long career, but he’s best known for his off-field antics.

He orally spelled out an obscenity on Sky Sports Goals on Sunday in 2007, then three years later, he offered a public apology after a decorated portable toilet in his garden containing inflatable sex toys caused a commotion on his block.

Armed cops were called to his house in 2018 after it was reported that he threatened delivery personnel and threw a curved scimitar sword at them. He later appeared in court, and after 14 minutes, the allegation was dismissed.

He even gave up a goal on his debut after becoming distracted by the huge screen in the corner of Upton Park after believing his team had scored.

Bobby Zamora, Bywater’s former teammate and former England ace, told Under the Cosh about the time the ‘keeper returned from vacation with scrapping on his mind.

“I remember him going away in the summer once to America to do six weeks of MMA fighting; this was back when MMA wasn’t even really that big,” he remarked. He returns, and all he wants to do in training is beat everyone up, strangle them… choke them out! He was crazy, but a great guy.
