West Ham United were ready to fire David Moyes at the end of last season, according to Sami Mokbel, but the Europa Conference League success threw a wrench in the works.

According to the Daily Mail’s leading football reporter, while West Ham may eventually break company with the manager at the end of this year, they intended for the process to begin last season.

The Hammers had a terrible league season that saw them flirt with relegation before a late run of form and the failures of the lesser clubs propelled them to 14th place.

Mokbel stated on the It’s All Coming Up podcast [13 November]: “I think he’s going to leave.” All of the information we have indicates that he will leave at the end of the season.

“I think there was a plan to do that last summer, at the end of last season, for him to move on, but them winning that European trophy the Conference League spun that direction on its head a little bit.

“How can you open the door for your head coach to leave when he’s just landed you your first trophy in decades? David Moyes deserves a lot of credit for turning that narrative around last season.”

The plan had been set in motion, suggesting that the choice not to extend Moyes’ tenure as West Ham manager for the long haul was made quite some time ago. Originally slated to depart last season, the current situation provides a smooth, trouble-free avenue for an amicable parting at the conclusion of his existing contract.

Following the recent Conference League triumph, dismissing him in the summer became impractical, and this season presents challenges given the credit accrued from that success. Rather than opting for a termination, the approach now is to naturally conclude his tenure.

Moyes had always been expected to leave in the near future. He rescued his job with a fantastic performance last season, but the club is moving in a different path. It remains to be seen whether it will be a case of the grass always being greener on the other side.

Whether the trigger is pulled immediately or he is allowed to leave at the conclusion of his contract, Moyes should retain the bulk of the fanbase’s respect and affection for what he accomplished in East London.
