Calvin Bassey left Rangers in 2022, and he hasn’t quite found his footing since. The former Ibrox star is currently having trouble in the Premier League with Fulham.

The Nigerian international has moved substantial sums of money, totaling close to £40 million, in each of the previous two summers. Calvin Bassey failed to live up to expectations at his new Craven Cottage home and at Ajax, a fee that isn’t precisely reflected in his form.

A guy who sparkled as Rangers advanced to the Europa League final a year and a half ago, only made the starting XI because to injuries to both Tosin Adarabioyo and Issa Diop, has not even gone close to matching that caliber of play in the last eighteen months.

Because of his lack of technical skill, Bassey became somewhat of a joke in the Netherlands. The pundits were again perplexed by Bassey’s 64% pass completion rate in Saturday’s dramatic 1-0 loss to Manchester United (WhoScored).

Former Rangers ace Calvin Bassey struggling at Fulham

After yet another misplaced Bassey ball, former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld tells Voetbal Primeur, “Once again, he is not good enough, actually.”

This caliber of pass… Respectfully, I fail to see the concept.

Things like this make it clear why he is sitting on the bench. Furthermore, I am aware that Ajax is content that they are without him.

In defense of himself, Bassey may have had his greatest games at Rangers when he was used as a left-back, showcasing his outstanding athleticism. Even if Bassey shown during that Europa League run that he can succeed in the middle, it makes sense that he appears a little uneasy standing in for Tim Ream, the right-sided center-half for Fulham, on the left.

‘Not good enough’

Having given the ball away twice in the build-up, Bassey—who was sent off against Arsenal earlier in the season—was responsible for both of the goals scored by Tottenham during their most recent 2-0 victory in West London.

Marco Silva sighed, per the Standard, “Tottenham pressed really strong on Calvin, knowing that we were playing with a left-footed centre back (on the right).”

“We received punishment for the same kind of objective.”
