Following the loss of the West Ham United trade, Liverpool is now looking to sign Odilon Kossounou.

According to The Sun, Liverpool are interested in Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Odilon Kossounou after his transfer to West Ham United “failed.”

The newspaper reported online (3 September) that the highly-rated 22-year-old was a summer transfer target for the Hammers, but the deal fell through.

According to The Guardian (14 August), the Hammers were looking for a speedy centre-back and listed Kossounou and Leverkusen teammate Jonathan Tah as potential targets, but now the Reds are interested in the guy who would “jump at a move to Merseyside.”

a missed opportunity

Despite the Irons’ greatly improved reputation and stature, most players would undoubtedly prefer to join Liverpool over West Ham.

The Hammers made some important signings for players who were expected to join Champions League clubs. Fans should not be unhappy if Kossounou leaves for Liverpool because the club has signed top-tier players such as Mohammed Kudus and James Ward-Prowse.

West Ham’s efforts to get a new center-back were rewarded with the signing of Konstantinos Mavropanos from Bundesliga side Stuttgart, but many believe the Hammers could have used another body to bolster the back line.

Their long-term interest in Manchester United’s Harry Maguire was public, but they were unable to reach an agreement due to United’s apparent hesitation and Maguire’s attempts to battle for his place.

Liverpool may have the final laugh and land a deal for the Ivory Coast international, and his apparent want to transfer to Anfield would put an end to any West Ham attempt to lure him to Stratford.
