The former Everton and Premier League misfit Jean-Phillipe Gbamin could have to wait until 2024 to find a new club because he is unlikely to secure himself a return to Russian football.

Then again, a few months out of the game may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who has been limited to only six Premier League appearances since joining Everton in a £25 million deal from Mainz back in 2019 due to near-constant injury issues, might do worse than to use this opportunity to improve his fitness once more.

According to Transfermarkt, Gbamin missed 14 games while on loan to Trabzonspor last season. The Ivory Coast international, who was released by Everton in September, might still be a free agent in January, according to his agent.

Everton released Jean-Philippe Gbamin

A trip back to Russia? Since the Russian market is currently closed, this is currently out of the question, according to Bernard Collignon, who spoke to Sport24 about the former CSKA Moscow player.

“There is also nothing to tell regarding club interest. The winter will reveal itself.

Gbamin initially made an impression during his time in Turkey, but his expectations of a long-term stay on the Black Sea shores were dashed by recurring problems.

Midway through the 2022–23 season, former Turkish international Giray Kacar reported that “Trabzonspor are investigating (keeping) this player for next season.”

“In my opinion, Gbamin is one of the best Trabzonspor have ever had. His physicality, speed, and his vision is good, in my opinion.”

Everton trim their squad

Gbamin was one of a number of high-earning players let go by Everton over the summer, the Toffees siezing the opportunity to trim down a bloated wage bill.

A portion of the money Everton saved by losing Moise Kean, Alex Iwobi, Demarai Gray, Asmir Begovic, Neal Maupay, Tom Davis, and Yerry Mina was used to sign young player Jarrad Branthwaite to a new contract.

On Friday, Branthwaite signed a document valid through the summer of 2027.
