Mark Robins was aiming to buy a central midfielder in the summer transfer window after selling star man Gustavo Hamer to Sheffield United.

at the end, the Sky Blues manager was unable to complete a deal before Friday’s trading deadline, leaving his squad thin on depth at such a crucial position.

Meanwhile, centre-back Joel Latibeaudiere represents Jamaica as a holding midfielder. Given this, CoventryLive asked the City manager if the summer transfer from Swansea could be a midfield option at some point.

“Well, potentially,” he responded, “but I’m not looking at that right now.” He’s first and foremost a defender, and I believe he needs to know where he needs to be, and I have other players for that role.”

So far, Josh Eccles has impressed alongside the great Ben Sheaf, while captain Liam Kelly has been used infrequently this season despite being a major component in City’s play-off campaign at the tail end of last season. In other news, Jamie Allen and Callum O’Hare are both expected to return from injury in the coming weeks.

“The fact that we didn’t sign anyone else isn’t a big deal,” Robins insisted. “However, when you lose a player like Gus…

“However, we’ve brought in Yasin Ayari, who is a player with potential.” He’s unlike anything else we’ve got, but it’s an opportunity for Josh Eccles, Jamie Allen, and others, and it’s a case of looking at what we’ve got because I can do different things. It allows us to do different things and provides us some flexibility.”
