Remo Freuler was permitted to transfer to Bologna by Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer period. In the last months of 2022/23, he struggled to find consistent first-team action and was labeled surplus.

In the summer of 2022, Freuler agreed to join Forest from Atlanta. Sadly, despite spending £7.5 million to join, he was unable to match his Serie A achievements.

In fairness, Freuler was simply a victim of Steve Cooper playing a style of football that didn’t play to his strengths. In a possession-based team, it’s impossible not to imagine Freuler performing better.

Freuler earns glowing praise since Forest exit

The 31-year-old will be thankful to play regular first-team football again. He didn’t play a single minute of action during the final six games of the season for Forest.

He is now beginning to settle down at Bologna. Following one of his games, Calciomercato gave him praise, writing: “Starting to master the midfield as expected from someone like him. Good effort.

Freuler is a very seasoned campaigner and he knows Serie A very well. In recent times, his performances for Switzerland have also been very good and he has 59 caps for his country.

Forest will hope to offload midfielder permanently

Freuler is surely on borrowed time as a Forest player. Although he’s only a season-long loan, it looks very unlikely that he will earn a reprieve at Forest any time soon.

Cooper had a good look at Freuler and he just didn’t really fit into the system that the Forest head coach deployed. Furthermore, there are now people ahead of him in the squad on Trentside.

The player was popular in the dressing room. He captained the team on several occasions but ultimately, it was the right choice for the Reds to get rid of him this summer.
